Good questions, straight answers.
The things homeowners ask me most. If yours isn’t here, text me and I’ll answer it personally.
What’s the difference between an estimate and a quote?
Your estimate is free. It’s an honest ballpark based on what you tell me and any photos you send, so you can decide whether the project fits your plans. It isn’t a fixed price.
Your quote comes after we sit down in person. It’s free, fixed, and in writing: one clear, all-in price for the whole job. The price I quote is the price you pay. See the full process →
What’s included in the in-person visit?
I walk through the space with you, look closely at the surfaces, and help with colour, sheen, stain and product choices. You see real samples in your own light before anything is decided, and you tell me the one thing that matters most to you for the job. There’s no charge and no obligation.
Do you work evenings or weekends?
[NOAH CONFIRM: your scheduling: which days and hours you book work, and how far ahead]
How do I pay?
[NOAH CONFIRM: payment terms: deposit (if any), accepted methods, and when the balance is due]
How long does a refinishing job take?
It depends on the size of the job, the condition of the surface, and the finish. Most finishes need drying time between coats, and many keep curing (hardening) for days or weeks after they feel dry, so I’ll tell you when surfaces are ready for light use and when they’re ready for normal use. You’ll get a realistic timeline with your written quote.
[NOAH CONFIRM: typical durations, e.g. a bedroom repaint or a set of doors]
Do I need to move my furniture?
Please put away small items, valuables and anything fragile before work starts. We’ll talk through larger furniture at the visit, and everything that stays in the room gets protected. [NOAH CONFIRM: whether you move heavy furniture yourself, and any limits]
How do you handle dust and odour?
Floors and furniture are covered and the work area is kept tidy as I go, with a spotless cleanup at the end. Where odour matters to you, low-odour products are often an option, and we can choose them together at the visit. If anyone in your home is sensitive to smells or dust, tell me up front and I’ll plan around it.
What materials and finishes do you use?
For the pieces you touch, see and live with every day, I choose solid wood, real veneers and genuine finishes that can be repaired and refinished rather than thrown out. Whatever goes into your home, I’ll tell you exactly what it is and why I chose it. See the materials I use →
[NOAH CONFIRM: preferred paint and finish brands, if you want to name them]
What does your guarantee cover?
All my work is guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship. If something I’ve painted or refinished fails because of how it was done or what it was done with, I’ll make it right. Normal wear is excluded.
Every project also starts with a condition report we both sign and ends with a documented handover, and I make a lifetime commitment to every surface I refinish.
What is the Name It Promise?
Before work starts, you name the one thing that would make the job a success for you. I write it down on your paperwork, and it becomes the standard I hold myself to, above everything else. Read the Name It Promise →
What is the Scratch, Chip, and Ding Damage Coverage?
It’s an optional add-on. Accidents happen, so for one flat fee you get six months of coverage against scratches, chips and dings on your new work, so a small slip doesn’t become something you look at every day. Ask me about it at your visit.
Who will be in my home?
Me, and only people I trust. Anyone who works on site with me has passed a thorough criminal record check, and they’re people I know well and personally stand behind.
Which areas do you serve?
The Cowichan Valley: Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, Cobble Hill and Duncan. Nearby but not on the list? Ask. See service areas →
Still wondering about something?
Ask me directly. You’ll get a real answer from the person who’d do the work.
